Hi chums!
One thing I love about going to new countries is trying the traditional food and we tried some great Austrian food in the week we were there!
Of course, hot chocolate doesn't really count but I just have to say hot chocolate tastes SO good in the mountains I can't even describe - especially in the -8 degree weather we had. It was actually snowing in the picture above even though you can't see it.
Tyrolean Gröstl is something we tried last time we came to Austria and we LOVED it. Mmmm I mean did someone say fried egg?? Gröstl is made up of meat, potato, fried egg and probably some more ingredients that I don't know about but it was delicious and perfect to share with the fam.
If you're in for something sweeter then you have no choice but to go for the Germknödel. If you look up a description of it there is some weird description of something to do with yeast which can be majorly off-putting but in reality it's just cake with a vanilla-y/custard-y vibe and some jammy sticky thing in the middle. Thinking about it, maybe my description is even worse... But I promise it's super yummy!
But the crown of mountain food goes to the sweet of all sweets, the pudding of all puddings, the Kaiserschmarrn. We asked for it with blueberries and, as you can see below, it was a kind of pancake/ batter mixture in a pan. It's warm, it's sweet, it will make you diabetic, but it's definitely worth it!
Sharing some Austrian food up the mountain is such a fun thing to do - especially when your fingers and toes are about to fall off and you desperately need warming up!
Love as always,
Emma
